What to Expect
When Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles claimed the area of St. Augustine in the name of Spain, he imagined a land filled with natural beauty, a bounty of treasure and infinite possibilities. However, over the next two hundred years of Spanish rule, the original settlers and their descendants suffered through illness, plagues, famine and devastating hurricanes.
With the expansion of St. Augustine, officials needed a place to house unruly inhabitants of the ancient city and in 1891 railroad tycoon, Henry Flagler commissioned the construction of the St. John’s County Jailhouse. For the next sixty years prisoners were housed in segregated and sometimes, unsanitary conditions. By the jail’s close in 1953, eight men met their fate at the gallows.
