What to Expect
When Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles claimed the area of St. Augustine in the name of Spain, he imagined a land filled with natural beauty, a bounty of treasure and infinite possibilities. However, over the next two hundred years of Spanish rule, the original settlers and their descendants suffered through illness, plagues, famine and devastating hurricanes.
With the expansion of St. Augustine, officials needed a place to house unruly inhabitants of the ancient city and in 1891 railroad tycoon, Henry Flagler commissioned the construction of the St. John’s County Jailhouse. For the next sixty years prisoners were housed in segregated and sometimes, unsanitary conditions. By the jail’s close in 1953, eight men met their fate at the gallows.
There are many who believe the strife of weary souls weighs heavy throughout the ancient city. Be aware of mysterious lights and eerie noises as you step onto the grounds of the nation’s oldest haunts. The areas are home to long time residents, whom many believe still linger about.
Built on the edge of the Tolomoto Cemetery sits one of St. Augustine’s most recognizable buildings, the Old Drug Store. Unexplained noises, cold spots and shadows reportedly moving on their own make up only a few of the hundreds of documented supernatural occurrences. Learn the secrets to these hauntings that have plagued the Old Drug Store from the time it first opened in 1887.
Afterwards get exclusive nighttime experience inside of Potter’s Wax Museum’s Chamber of Horrors for a unique retelling of the famed pirate Andrew Ransom’s gruesome execution.
All of the stories told are well researched and documented. In addition, a large selection of paranormal books on the hauntings of St. Augustine are available. Make sure to bring your camera as orbs, energy bands and other paranormal activity are frequently caught on film.
